Postoperative Shoulder Instructions

You may shower but you cannot go in the pool or spa for 10 days from surgery.

You should continue icing as much as possible for the next several days to one week.  Icing should be done on 15 minutes and then off 15 minutes to prevent frostbite.

You may remove the dressing on your own 10 days after surgery.

You should not perspire for 10 days from surgery.

After 10 days from surgery you may go to the gym and ride a stationary bike.  We prefer the recumbent bicycle.  Rhythmic activities are bad for tendon healing so avoid StairMaster, elliptical trainer, jogging and treadmills.

You should begin passive “Pulley and Pendulum” exercises today as seen on the video at www.SMOGshoulder.com .

Do not lift anything heavier than a coffee cup with your operative arm.  Lifting heavy objects with the other arm will cause your operative arm muscles to fire spontaneously and impede healing.

You should not do any activities where your elbow actively leaves your side.

You should wear the KnappSak 2 full-time for a week other than when showering or doing your passive range of motion exercises.  You should wear the sling at night until seen for your next follow up visit.  Always wear the sling in public so people will stay away from you.

Remember that being “good” is like being "a little bit pregnant".  You are either good or not.  We are trying to get you to heal and allow the Sharpey’s fibers to grow back into the bone.  If you misbehave the fibers will not reattach and the repair will fail.

If you have any questions please check the FAQ’s on www.SMOGshoulder.com .
